My name is Tony. I am 26 years old. I am currently enrolled at the University of Southern Mississippi as a sophomore. I also live on campus. Pursuing a degree in English, I plan on becoming a published author after graduation, focusing on writing poetry, which I love. I also enjoy photography.
Prior to enrolling at the University of Southern Mississippi, I was involved with TRIAD AmeriCorps and the USM Step Up Council. Both organizations are comprised of members with and without disabilities. As a member of these groups, I volunteered in community events and promoted self-advocacy for people with disabilities. Serving in these organizations taught me humility and determination. In 2015, I attended the AUCD (American University Centers on Disability) Conference where, on behalf of Step Up Council, accepted the CCAA which is presented to a council that has exhibited the strongest commitment to support the full and active participation of self-advocates and family members.
Obstacles I have faced following my goals center on some individuals lack of belief that I could actually accomplish them because of my disability. Though I have a developmental delay, I have managed to “push the envelope at both ends” and achieve several goals which include attending USM and living on campus.
In sharing my story, I hope to inspire other people with disabilities to follow their dreams as well, knowing that with determination and faith, you can achieve them. I want to thank my family for their support and encouragement.
